2000 Year Highlights
By Wanda Ray
January 2000: Shawnee
Community College again was our meeting place for our “gift exchange”
and the election of officers. There were some really great gifts that
several wanted, so it took some real strategy to be the winner. Bob Ray
took a video of it for all to see later on. (He may take bribe money to
destroy it). Since Ellerbusches had express their wish to be notified of
our dates and places, it was decided to have a “Friends of Jayco Flight
#9 listing to include the former members and others that wish to be
associated with our club. We welcomed the Frank Shermans from Goreville,
IL, as new members. Table games followed a great meal. We hope the
Eleams, Proffits, and Bennetts are warm down “South”
February 2000 – Does it surprise you that we met at the Grecian
Steakhouse in Paducah, KY? There were 27 in attendance. Kyle Allbritten
thought that all the door prizes should be for the man in the
family…(that was just his opinion)….it started out that way with a tool
box being won by George & Mary Taylor.
March 3, 2000 – eight families flushed out their campers and
braved the early Spring. It was a time to remember the history of our
club. Faye & Gene Burden just made it in from Florida with a bushel of
fresh oranges!!! We all enjoyed that. The group went to Luke’s in
Arlington for supper. (Eating again)
April 7, 2000 – Redman Creek at Lake Wappapello, MO was our
meeting spot. Denny & Elsie Hinkle from Buncombe, IL visited with us.
Supper was at the Black Angus Steak House. Two new babies this month,
Eleam’s first granddaughter, and the Ryan’s new grandson. Lots of good
times planned for this year.
May 2000 – First ones at Piney Campground, Rays’, Burdens’, and
visitors Jim & Donna Young (in their new motorhome) enjoyed beautiful
weather, waves rolling and breezes blowing. It was time for the men to
pamper the ladies with breakfast again. Cynthia brought the mural for
the backdrop, lights, and trees for the Jayco Rally in Warrens, WI.
June 2000 – Rend Lake, IL – South Sandusky –Pintail Loop. The
weather was too warm for a fire, but the men sat by one anyway and the
ladies sat by Deirdre’s fan. The ladies tried to convince the men to fix
the breakfast on Saturday, but all they agreed to do was set up the
grill. John Haley said that he and Cynthia were going to quit camping
and he was going to have a ‘tail gate sale’ after our meeting to dispose
of his camping ‘stuff’.
(He later changed his mind…but that’s another story). Some went out
‘motorcycle looking’, while others shopped for antiques. Thanks to Gene
Burden that lowered several awnings when a big wind came up. We consumed
3 ˝ gallons of homemade ice cream.
July 2000 – Canal Campground – Fisherman’s Row near Grand Rivers,
KY. Seven families were on their way out West. Wanda Ray wrote a journal
of the trip out West and continued through the Jayco International Rally
in Warrens, WI. (24 days and 4,900 miles). Copy is included.
August 2000 – John James Audubon State Park in Henderson, KY was
our spot. Saturday morning was a good breakfast prepared by the men.
Rheitta Eleam has a club picture album for all to enjoy. Hinkles fixed
their TV problems with a rather expensive item…..a new trailer!!!!
Over the Labor Day Weekend. Hinkles, Rays, Ryans, Wrights, Burdens, &
Allbrittens went to Fall Creek Falls State Resort Park – south of
Cookeville, TN. Faye & Elsie walked all the way to the bottom of the
Falls & back…..then a nap!!!
September 2000- Weatherman was calling for rain Friday through
Sunday, but Flight 9 would not be stopped even by having to change the
site from Cave-in-Rock to KY Dam Village State Park because of
construction issues. Kyle Allbritten announced that they had a NEW Jayco
on order at Youngbloods. The Proffitts showed up in a NEW Jayco 5th
wheel----impossible to keep up with this group. Durwood and Dale
supervised John Haley as he set up his “Jayco” tent.!! We had a fish fry
cook out with all the trimmings. Visiting were Bob & Patsy Snow, (former
members), Jim Borum and John Haley saw a rig coming in and was sure it
was the Ryans, even tho’ they had said they wouldn’t be there. So they
began waving their arms and guided the driver (who was a lady) into the
campsite before they realized THEY DID NOT EVEN KNOW THEM. There was
some remark made that we should ask Frank Sherman about a battery
Isolator. Have no idea what that means….you ask him. Saturday night we
had rain & lightning…it was good for sleeping, but not good for Haley’s
tent.
October 2000 – our 12th annual October Invitational Event. The
usual Halloween activities were carried on, with lots of winners. This
year is almost over.
November 2000 – Two Rivers Campground, Nashville, TN This was an
Opryland trip. (Sometime later Opryland ceased to be….little did we
know). Went to the Opryland Hotel for breakfast at the Cascade’s
Restaurant. We welcomed the Randy Knights’ from Energy, IL, as our
newest members.
December 2000 – Flight #9 had its Christmas meeting at the Family
Life Center of First Baptist in Metropolis, IL. Officers elected were:
President – Bill Ryan, Vice Pres./Wagon Master – Eugene Burden,
Activities Director – Pat Sherman, Secretary- Deirdre Allbritten,
Treasurer – Dennie Hinkle. Dates and places for the 2001-year were set.
Time flies when you are having fun..another year gone.
