2000-6

4-Rivers Jayco Flight #9
June Meeting – June 9-11, 2000
Rend Lake – South Sandusky (Pintail Loop)

What a super weekend for camping!  It always seems that this last campout is always the best, but I’m sure all our campouts are equally good. We had beautiful weather with only one little teeny shower on Saturday evening during supper.

On Thursday a caravan of campers started from Metropolis with Durwood & Rheitta Eleam, Gene & Faye Burden, Jim & Donna Young and Bob & Mary Lauderdale. When they arrived at Rend Lake, Ed & Johnnie Wyatt were already set up.  On Friday the rest of our group arrived: Dale & Jan Wright, Jim & Mitzi Borum with Jarred and his friend Chase Schmidt, Bill & Betty Ryan, George & Mary Taylor, John & Cynthia Haley with Johnny and their “Jayco” tents, Kyle & Crystal Allbritten with Ryan and Jordan, Odell & Deirdre Allbritten.  Last but not least, Dave and Martha Sue Peters cycled in on their motorcycle and trailer and pitched their tent. Also camping with our group were the Peters’ friends, Ron & Sandi Deming from McKenzie, Tennessee, and the Ryans’ friends, Norma & Charlie Taylor from Franklin, Pennsylvania.  Visiting the Eleams were their daughter, Susan Thompson, and their new baby granddaughter, Audrey, and the Wrights’ daughter, Mindy, visited with them.  The Shermans had to cancel at the last minute due to the death of Frank’s stepdaughter, and they had to travel to Wisconsin for the funeral.  Saturday evening we were pleased to have Jean & Norman Proffitt and Don & Joann Bennett come to visit and eat supper with us.

Friday evening several enjoyed a potluck supper at the Lauderdale’s campsite. Bob grilled bologna and it was reported to be very tasty. The weather was almost too warm for a campfire, but the men built one anyway. Doesn’t seem like camping unless there is a campfire.  The men
sat around the campfire, while the women gathered around the Deirdre’s fan. We tried to talk the men into cooking breakfast for the women on Saturday morning, but all they volunteered to do was set the grill up.

The sun dawned bright and warm on Saturday morning and at 8 AM the women gathered at the Lauderdale’s campsite and started cooking a huge breakfast. We all took turns cooking the bacon & sausage, and Rheitta got her griddle and we had two batches of pancakes cooking. I think the men can cook breakfast faster, but we cooked more.  We lost count on how many pounds of sausage and bacon and boxes of pancake mix that we cooked, but I believe every one got plenty to eat. If they didn’t, it was because they quit eating too soon. After the delicious breakfast, Odell called our business meeting to order at 9:55 AM. The minutes from the May meeting were read and approved. Haley reported about $1,101 in the treasury including all
the monies to be received.

Under old business Dale reported that Jim Young would be cooking (probably chicken) on Friday night at our 4 State Rally in July 2001.We really appreciate Jim doing this for us.  Thanks to Cynthia for getting all the decorations together for us for the International Rally. Jan will be bringing the tools to put the mural on the drywall. Under new business it was suggested that the club purchase a bacon press for our grill. We decided to find out where we could buy one and the price. Faye asked for suggestions or ideas for our web page. It was discussed that maybe each couple could have their picture taken and placed beside their name on the membership page. We really appreciate Faye for putting new stuff on the web page and keeping it up to date so well. We gave Faye a round of applause for all her hard work.

John Haley said that he and Cynthia were going to quit camping and he was going to have a “tail gate sale” after the meeting to get rid of some of his extra camping stuff. We hope they will change their minds and camp with our group many more years.

Under the Wagonmaster report, Jim Borum reported the next campout would be July 21-23 at Canal Campground (Fisherman’s Row) on Lake Barkley near Grand Rivers, KY. We will have a potluck supper with Jim Young providing the Bar-b-Que. You can make reservations for Canal by calling  (877) 444-6777 or on the Internet at www.reserveusa.com. Several from
our club will be leaving for the Western trip to Gillette, WY on July 12 and join up with the rest of us for the International Rally. The International Rally will be held in Warrens, Wisconsin July 31-August 4.August 18-20 we will be at Audubon State Park, Henderson, KY with the men cooking breakfast for the women and OYO for supper.

There was no activity report. We decided to send a plant to the home
of the Shermans in memory of their stepdaughter who passed away.  We
would have worship service on Sunday morning at 9:30 AM with George
leading the singing and Odell giving a talk.

The Taylors won the door prize, which was donated by the Wyatts.  It was a beautiful cedar jewelry box, which was handmade by Ed. The Borums  will donate the July door prize.
Saturday afternoon we visited, shopped for antiques, some of the men “window” shopped for motorcycles and some of us took an afternoon siesta. Saturday evening several enjoyed dinner at the Rend Lake Lodge overlooking the golf course and lake with a fountain. The Burdens,
Haleys, and Kyle Allbrittons stayed at the camp and a strong wind came up. Thanks to John,  Gene and Kyle for putting all our awnings down so the wind would not damage our campers.  One thing about our club, they all look out for each other.

When we got back to the campground, out came the ice cream freezers. We consumed 3 ½ gallons of delicious home made ice cream. I hope we didn’t keep the Lauderdales awake, as some of us did not turn in until well after midnight.

Sunday morning we had our worship service and then began packing up and going home. A few of us stayed and enjoyed a picnic lunch and then reluctantly headed for home. Another great weekend!  All of you who will be going out West, have a great and safe trip.  Hope to see the rest of you at Canal. We sure missed the Rays, Shermans and Hinkles at Rend Lake.
