August 2003 Newsletter

It was a tiny bit rainy during our August campout.  But a few brave souls joined together for a holiday weekend of camping at Canal Campground in LBL.  They were John & Cynthia Haley, Randy & Vicki Knight with Nathan & his friend Julie, Charlie & Marla McElroy with the Singers, Bob & Wanda Ray,  Frank & Pat Sherman, and George & Mary Taylor, & Eugene & Faye Burden.  Vicki’s Mother (Saundra Brookshire) spent Labor Day night with her.  The Ray’s, Taylor’s and Vicki (with her Mom) braved the rain and stayed until Tuesday.

Sometime prior to Saturday morning, Mary had an accident with her teeth at Ryan’s.  She then spent the rest of the weekend wearing a mask.  Saturday some shopped at the outlet mall at Eddyville, I believe George was showing off a new belt & buckle.  Others visited the Flea market & Charlie went fishing.  Saturday evening several joined Bob & Wanda around a faint campfire (with fans blowing) for a game of “Catch Phrase”.  This brought much laughter as well as some interesting phrases.  I think we have all unofficially banned Randy from giving clues in the future.  You will have to ask him what went wrong with his clues.  There were patches of sun now & then over the weekend.  On Sunday morning, Nathan did our worship service.  The afternoon was pretty much rain free.  Sunday evening we had a potluck.  As usual there was lots of food.  Sunday was Pat & Frank’s 18th Anniversary.  So we had pie from Patti’s to celebrate.  There was even ice cream.  Of course we had to play “Catch Phrase” again.  This game is lots of fun & pits the men against the women.  I’m not going to say who won the most games.  I’m not sure we even paid attention to that; we just all enjoyed the laughter and fun of the game.  Most people left on Monday.  We had a great time together.  We missed those of you who couldn’t make it.  Hope to see you at Fern Clyffe.

There was no meeting this month.  (Not enough officers were present).  The Wyatt’s furnished the Door Prize and the Haley’s won.  Dale called me before the Canal campout and suggested that the men fix breakfast on Saturday morning (next month at Fern Clyffe.) Following you will find a list of what to bring.  If you aren’t planning on attending the September campout, please let me know.  Also we will have a potluck on Saturday night.  We would like to play Bingo after dinner, so bring some wrapped white elephant gifts for that.  I have received an e-mail from Dale saying that several are camping at Fort Massac this weekend, September 5-7 if anyone would like to join them.  Our Remaining Campouts are:

September 12–14 Fern Clyffe in Goreville, IL    (directions below).  This is the weekend for the Apple Festival in Murphysboro, IL, about 1 hour away.

October 10-12 Hillman’s Ferry LBL - The Hunters Moon festival in Grand Rivers, KY, about 15 minutes away.  Plus our usual Halloween campout activities
